Tarnation is a film by Johnathan Caouette where he combines footage from his life that he took on a sense8 camera, over the span of 20 years, to create a narrative on growing up with his schizophrenic mother. From Renee (his mother) growing up being a model, having an accident, getting 200 electric shock treatments, and then following that through onto the affect it had on his life and how he believes the shock treatments are to blame for her mental state. We follow as Johnathan gets older and discovers his sexuality, going to gay bars at 13 and we are shown footage of him filming himself doing a monologue when he was around that age of him dressed as a woman in an abusive relationship. We also see Johnathan begin to be shaped as a person, and even how he got into film with the friends he met who introduced him to it. The narrative is carried by the captions on screen that takes you through like a typical story, as Johnathan refers to himself as third person - which I think works ...

I found a book in the library called 'Punk, Poets, & Provocateurs - New York Bad Boys - 1977-1982' and found some really interesting photos by Marcia Resnick. I like how Marcia Resnick's portraits burst each of the subject's personality, whether it's in colour or black and white, as well as managing to grasp this energy of the moment. I love the aesthetic of these photos and would like to attempt to use the studio and lights for my own portraits, as currently I have been using environments around me. I like the sense of performance and extremity that they have to them with the 'exposed' look.  I like the first photo's background and how it is used with the accessories in the subject, as well as the pose and glasses that all add to the eccentric atmosphere of the picture. I really enjoyed the task of creating a visual haiku in the form of a poetic film, it was fun to experiment and practise using Premiere Pro. The beginning strange walk up/down the stairs was fun to film and was inspired by the bizarre way the character move in old movies like Metropolis (1927) and to create this I filmed it backwards and in slow motion, so when editing i reversed it so it was then the right way round, and sped it up to give it the correct/normal speed. I thought of doing this as I know in music videos they speed up the music when lip syncing, to give it the slow motion you see at the end of the edit.  I really loved the nature shots Lukas and I managed to capture on the day of a storm - it looks almost dystopic. I overlapped shots and made them transparent, which turned out to be interesting. An idea I came up with while editing was to use the noises of the footsteps to represent the Haiku syllables; 5,7,5. After looking at the photos from the previous shoot, I decided I wanted to do another shoot as I was not fully happy with the photos in the shower because I felt that they could look better. This time I decided to think more about shutter speed and it's affect on the water falling. I tried using a quicker shutter speed to capture the water droplets, however when shooting we found that it was quite dark and so we had to have a low aperture, even though I wanted a deeper depth of field so I then had the focal length as small as possible. Additionally we had to bump up the ISO to 400. The photos are still a bit dark, but I can really see the progress from the first shoot. I had some ideas for some portraits that I came up with while looking through books I found in the library as well as a few images that I saw online when looking for artists that did self-portraits. I decided to attempt to shoot some of these ideas with the help of Lukas on Wednesday the 18th of October. The main idea I wanted to do was in the shower, fully dressed, as well as a close up with my hands over my face. Above, you can see how i experimented with the framing and focal length and I used the flash in all of the images as I wanted an exposed look.
