a week in art // 27may-02june 2024

monday 27th may

a while ago i bought two planks of wood from b&q about 80inches long each maybe?

today i decided to finally chop one of them into shelves, using the workbench i bought the other week... ive done little sawing bits before but this bench made it so much easier its insane.. i knew it would but still !

i made one 30inches long to go above my bed and 2 18inch ones to go beside my desk

I sanded them with the help of desiree and then took a break bc of the rain. the rain stopped and was able to continue sanding, but before hand i had a walk to the shop and got a can of coke.
the wood was outside in bnq so there were some stains which i was able to sand away most of,, i also sanded it to lessen the stain and make the wood a touch lighter.

decided to use the end of the plank to try make one of the brackets for the shelf. i had some ideas and did some sketches and thought id just freehand it and go from there as i had plenty of wood. here are the refs i screenshotted:

my sketches / plans / thoughts:

the first bracket went well. i didn't take photos of the process but i took pictures while doing the second one which i was much faster at.. i think i finished the secon one in about 45minutes? think i might try sand them both a bit more though..

then i held it together to see what it will look like and im pretty happy with it ! need to buy some big screws tho

working on van gogh post and looking at the printing methods i took pictures of and thoughts a bit about art and accessibility.. a lot of discussion around the arts is about making careers and ideas and standards accessible. class mobility etc. however not making materials an education accessible... i want to try some of the printing methods i saw at the gallery but the tools i need are things i have no idea how to even begin to find ! i also frequently miss the c41 machine at uni, and idek where id be able to find one now to use, even if i had to pay... if that makes any sense.

tuesday 28th may

weird weird day.

set my alarm to wake up at 2pm, but ended up waking at half 12 as there were police yelling outside our house and arresting some people and hitting them with a baton. also woke up with three, what looks like spider, bits on my hand. put some vinegar on it n it made it less itchy.

went to town/the centre at 3pm. went to get film developed and scanned some shopping lists while i was waiting. they changed the scanner program so i had some hassle with it as i usually scan it on the photo setting, but the size was cropping itself and cutting stuff out ! i managed to figure out a way to trick it by putting some lists poking into the sides.

collected film

scanned photos at library on the photocopier

went to cafe nero bc i rlly needed to eat.

went to life drawing. was ok... felt a bit flop tho , think im prob just tired and also the group is v busy n it was noisy etc. i think i prefer smaller groups

my pencil broke and thought id just use pastel but dont think it turned out very well, wasnt v happy with it.

like this kinda minimalist vibe?

went to pub and had some food bc was starving

edited the photos i scanned into singular pictures in bed

wednesday 29th may

dont mind the time a bit b4 work. synced it up more,,, idk what to do w the end,, feels like a cop out

went to work and got a free plant bc it was gonna get thrown away , it sprung back to life as soon as id potted it

metal stars, painted orange on paper. watched maurice

friday 31st may

woke up and painted chairs painting for a bit,, worked on the lower part of the painting

went to b and q before it shut as needed to get some bits for my shelves.. got some pin nails, screws & wall plugs, and a wood plane (as the wood is warped and i wanna see if i can level it out a touch,). also got a pot for the new plant

also while walking to the car, saw this book on the floor

tried new wood plane for half an hour when i got home and leveled it out.

watched tv for a while and then did film photos from amsterdam blog post in beddy.

Saturday 1st june

work

did some ink flower drawings, had good time

sunday 2nd june

attached brackets to shelf! took me less than an hour and most of that time was spent figuring out how to go about it. surprised by how well its come out. the pale patch is where i used the wood plane the other day

went skating,... took pictures on my camera on the 50min walk there n also on the way bacckkk. stopped at a petrol station too and had a pepsi, which was very nice..

found taking photos very interesting as it was very different in shooting colour. i hve realised tht when i shoot colour, i mainly look for interesting things to photograph via the colour, however i cant do that with black and white. with colour i think i look for interesting colours, and then think about composition either before i take my camera out or as im lining up the shot, but with black and white i kinda need to look for interesting shapes etc first. and also contrast, however today wasn't a very sunny evening so there wasn't a lot of interesting contrasts with the light...

at the skating thng there was also a zine and bookbinding workshop.. was p fun, eventho ive done both before..

filled shelves w glue while watching tv.. piping bag method !

need to collect some sawdust so i can mix it with the glue and shove it in there...

also did a sketch of a lamp
