FIELDS & FRAMES | figuring out my ideas

DANCE
for dance i found it difficult to think about as a common/generic dance film wasn't something I was interested in due to the fear of a) not being able to make something interesting and b) trying to think about the physicality of the body. So, I decided to look more into a different side of movement and think of other things like theatre.
I had quite a lot of visual ideas from the very first class in this blogpost here.
things on the spider diagram:
Shadows - because of my difficulties in comprehending the physicality of dance and movement, i thought about filming just shadows as this would also take away the identity of the 'dancer' as its inevitable that how the actor looks will add something to film whether it be their gender, hair style, or what they're wearing. even making choices like wearing something simple would add a 'meaning' to it.
Breathing - thought about the movement in simple things like Andy Warhol's Sleep as an example.
Chorus - comes from the theatre side of things as I had been recently thinking about the structure of a chorus and how it was interesting and also the three lodgers in the Metamorphosis play by Berkoff. I think this idea of 3 characters functioning as one unit was something i could incorporate into this. I also had an idea that the chorus could represent doctors making notes on the performer
F&F
at the beginning I thought fields and frames was about drawing on film so I did a diagram for that. Was beginning to thinking about the internet then so wrote that down and i liked how you could use sound on film so i looked into that and found this video:
I was also beginning to read Ulysses so I thought it would be interesting to have a stream of thought written across the film and also about the physicality of film and what makes something obtain worth.

Also wrote down some other things I was thinking about:
- philosophy/the play waiting for godot and how it links to purpose.
- how the only definitive in 'life' is death and what would the concept of immortality do to this?
- action painting

I also wrote this just with my thoughts on i guess??? one of the reasons i wasnt sure about the chorus idea was because I was struggling to write a narrative FOR the chorus, as the chorus often comments on or explains the narrative, I only had to image of the archetype of the chorus in my head however couldnt quite figure out where i was going with it.
I wrote about negative space as thats what the action painting reminded me of with the air being the negative space, that the paint travels though, between artist and canvas. Also there's the negative space between computers and communications that make up the internet as well as the form of a body and the negative space between the form of that and the conscience/communication between people. This then reminded me of the art piece Ceci nest pas une pipe and the difference between a Body and a 'Person'.
I was then thinking about this video I saw about ATP and how life is the process of ongoing biological processes.
Another sheet where i tried to summarise everything.
I made a note of Metropolis at the top as it suddenly popped into my head as during A level we were looking at the movement of machinery and people in the opening and as The Theatre of Cruelty is about waking people up so this could be something to incorporate.
Also found a video on music with a 'drunken feel' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MzKx0fKg5o) and thought that was interesting if it was paired with a kind of nocturnal scene??

i wrote out/doodles some phrases with a pen as I had a sudden thought about Orion and then read about the constellation on wikipedia and i thought it was cool how similar it was to the Godot/purpose idea and thought it was along the lines of chasing something and distractions.

classical piano?? person playing the piano/very movement-y, remember when i was playing the violin when i was like 10 and my mum said she'd always thought when musicians are moving about on Tv n stuff they looked dumb but that made her see that playing an instrument you tend to move about n stuff ??? creation theme carried on??
chorus outfit - look at paintings/artwork.
expressionism like the scream quote?? :
“I was walking along a path with two friends – the sun was setting – suddenly the sky turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.”
dirty computer videoooo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdH2Sy-BlNE&has_verified=1)

anti social/isolation, be my wife david bowie
The revolution will come soon. All this will be destroyed. The world must be destroyed. It is corrupt, and full of ugliness. It is full of mummies, I tell you. Roman decadence. Death. I wanted a theatre that would be like a shock treatment, galvanize, shock people into feeling.
— Antonin Artaud, from The Diary of Anaïs Nin Vol. 1
"
Theatre of Cruelty is an avant-garde, surrealist theatre movement associated specifically with Antonin Artaud and taking characteristics from Brecht. The “cruelty” in the name refers to an assault on the audience’s senses that purposefully makes them feel uncomfortable emotions. So loud noises, harsh lights, taboo themes, etc. Artaud’s Les Cenci (an adaptation of Percy Shelley’s The Cenci) is one of the strongest (and weirdest) examples.
I just finished a paper on Peter Weiss’ play Marat/Sade, which shares some characteristics with both Brecht’s epic theatre and Artaud’s ideas of Theatre of Cruelty. I know it really flourished in mid-20th century Cuba as well! "

I had a tutorial with rosie which catalysed my thoughts and ideas i'd been thinking briefly about.
what is valuable/what makes something obtain 'worth', nihilism
aristotle&ulysses - perceptions, visual split between modality and substance
combine sound from film with dance?? research practitioners
just because we can hold it in our hands does it make it any more real? is the physicality of a photograph merely an attempt to hold on to the past? Validation of your existence and that It Happened or that We even Existed. not to sound too Existentialist...
ideas:
drawingfilm _ iams sound, train of thought like ulysses
try write music on it?? ABA thing
Dance _ game controlled??
difficult thinnking about the body bc i find it difficult to even conceptualise my own hehe
breathing? sleep warhol
looked into PRACTITIONERS AND THEATRE

also read theatre and its double by artaud. super interesting lol
also thinking about polaroids for Fields and frames, however i feel i dont see that much point in photography at the moment, in the terms of its function and tangibility (or lack of)

thinking of reoccuring dreams as I had been reading about them on wikipedia and also freud stuff like Irma's injection.
Metropolis & loops
This is not the internet like the Ceci n'est pas une pipe art piece.
Also read about digital poetry and thought about the possibility of creating a website or something and have links people could interact with?
Like i originally expected, my Fields & Frames idea came out to be a mix of the ideas/thoughts i had for F&F as well as Dance Film.
Had a list in my notes of questions I had around different things like oil painting and one was what if all computers were all destroyed, if someone built another computer would they still have access to 'the same' internet. I dont think they would because the main LANs/WANs or whatever would be destroyed, but an interesting concept.

Finally decided to do a sound piece with an epic voiced over and a visual painting that moves slightly like a gif or something.
For the Epic/Epyllion I wrote some brief ideas of phrases, pacing, language, etc. For example I wanted it to have a digital lexical field to allude to the technological stuff and the last words to be 'The Internet'.
WHY I CHOSE NOT TO DO DANCE FILM
liked the ideas but i didn't like how i would have to change them to fit into the unit and didnt want to be limited by trying to force a highlighted dance or movement. I really like a lot of the concepts I came up with and possibly might write it as a play.
very helpful and confirmed a lot of my ideas. Read into some of the stuff i was recommended.
painting move VFX
voice over poem like velvet goldmine (end line.. The Internet) mayb a future story where someone refinds the internet????????
sound piece
use this to edit paintings. photograph each layer, edit on photoshop and then put into after effects.
Also thought of these things when researching modern poetry:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_poetry
https://www.edutopia.org/blog/digital-poetry-terry-heick
poetry on a webpage??
AND ALSO thought about artaud some more as i was reading his book 'The Theatre and its Double' where he spoke about poetic stuff and hieroglyphs.
artaud's theory of theatre w poetic&emotion, things taken apart
also the theory of ready mades?? (i dont know what i was thinking when i wrote this in reference to the projects, but i had been thinking about them a lot~)
did my learning agreement end of march and now i had a solid idea, i knew what i needed to work on and when during the time between then and the deadline.
There was 2 weeks til Easter so the plan was to first get the narrative poem sorted so i could then move on to work the sound around it and also work on the painting while doing this which wouldn't be too hard as I could add a bit at a time as I was doing it in layers.
I think i completed the poem in week 1 and then during week 2 worked on the sound on audition over the weekend and then went into uni to sort some stuff on protools and then I'd go back home for a change of scenery and add it to the audition file and do this til the end of the week. Just before uni closed for easter, I made sure i had a variety of different MIDI recordings saved so i could add it over Easter gradually. I did a bit of editing during Easter, and brought it together a lot more, however I still decided I needed to do a bit more MIDI/protools stuff to fill bits in as the stuff i had was good but didnt really work with the mood i was going for.
