MAPS & NETWORKS 2: developing
Since my original thoughts/ideas I have had a lot of images/brief ideas hanging around in my head, however struggled to tie any of it down into a form.
here are some notes I made in a blog post after doing the first one:
JUDITH BUTLER
DRAG installation
PERFORMANCE?
TARNATION
film of performing/characters?
be an Experience.. like exploding plastic inevitable??
GENDER - IDENTITY SOCIAL. RELOOK AT IDENTITY SCHOOL OF LIFE VIDEO AND DAVID HUME.
clothes combine?
gender /memes/dada to deconstruct
Here i wrote down the notes from the videos I watched over the summer on what makes you You. They're both from the channel School of Life. The word flux reminded me of the fluxus movement which at first wasn't really relevant to my film idea at the time, however it became more a part of it as when I had the filming drawing idea it. These concepts encouraged me to want to explore identity/map it out along with creativity as the two are quite closely linked.

I dont know how to explain what was happening, but ill try.
I was thinking of gender and how its a social performance and that reminded me of Judith Butler as she is a philosopher who is based around the theory that gender is an improvised performance.
I also had the idea of doing some sort of video, however I wanted it to be low-ish quality/imperfect and that made me think of the clips from Tarnation and the Drag installation I went to. i basically had a lot of images and brief ideas hanging about but they weren't really transitioning into anything
I wrote my notes out from the previous post on a piece of paper to help see them displayed out.
I then wrote down the sources/inspirations I had in mind. I had recently watched the film 'Vinyl' by Andy Warhol and liked the camera placement, and also was thinking of things that had 'acting' type aesthetic and i thought this could be quite metaphysical if used in a certain way.

Here i wrote down the visuals that were in my head to be able to see them in front of me rather than just thinking of them to try and compare them to the sources page i did.
because a lot of my visual influence at this point was to do with the drawings i was currently doing, i decided to use this format to try map out my ideas that i had at that time. I came up with the idea to use tin foil as i was thinking of a mirror under water but then it then occurred to me tin foil would give a same type of distortion.
I wanted to make the layout of the installation like a map on a wall as I had been thinking of creating a space to create an interactive atmosphere. The map layout is in a room sort of layout inspired by this painting I did a few years ago. I think the reason why I had a room in mind as A Room is someone's space and has a lot of significance to it, if that makes sense?

The image of a door is something that was in my head all summer and this is shown in some paintings i did then, as i was thinking about the door being a possibility of going somewhere else but it also has the potential of stopping you. I also had in my head that the door for this project had a hallway behind it(the mirror) but i have no idea why.
Through this, I kept drawing, as I told Rosie i was just really into drawing at that moment in time, to try and figure some things out:
Here i would say my ideas really began to become more something
that was becoming something or at least had the potential to.
I had a sudden burst of creative energy thoughts while in class for some reason. I had a lot of interconnecting ideas, a lot of which I dropped, but i think here you can see a lot of the connections.
stimulation, memories, exploding plastic inevitable, gender, freud, pens, etc.

I then wrote out a very very messy layout and here you can see how it came together and how it progressed into the final outcome.
I had the flux creation part, which was heavily inspired by the Vinyl movie i mentioned earlier with the framing/angle also the exploding plastic inevitable with the aspect of 'a performance' and music. For the split screen id/superego with femininity/masculinity i was thinking along the same type of framing and inspired by this scene that ive put in below. At this point in time i was thinking about creating some type of choreographed movement to represent these two different things and have them merge together.
'walking thorough a corridor' was the beginning of the idea of something progressing/moving forward. I also wrote down the devil's trill sonata as I was thinking of the idea of Mephistopheles or someone stood over a bed and maybe merging the sonata story into something with Faust? however I was almost sure I wasnt going to do anything along these lines but i wanted to write it down in case it came up again and I needed it.
I was also thinking of the book I read over the summer called The Idiot by Dostoyevsky and how a conversation works in providing the audience with detail. Other things that came to mind was coffee and cigarettes by Jim Jarmusch, Frances Ha, etc but i will explore that more in the next blog post.
I was also thinking of Performance Art like these:

article rosie suggested

saw mentioned neitzche and then reminded of a level film, freud, fight club. ego and id. masc and femininity. one masc screen, one fem, masc has id and fem super ego, then swap so masc super ego fem id, then slowly merge behaviours/energy, have props on screen like that practitioner cant remember who. then become the same but overlap. dont have to be specific gender/objects can be presented in a movement like a jump or throw.???
maybe a spotlight/stage?
repeat a few times to get it smooth - idea of takes that greta gerwig mentioned in video i watched as i was trying to find out more about writing scripts a while ago.
