window reflection photography
While in Manchester I was alone in my airbnb room for the night and decided to take photos out of the window with my macro lens as things were quite far away. I ended up getting some really nice shots and utilised the reflections in the window to get some cool stuff. I think it would be interested to combine these with street photography as it would give an interesting perspective of subject and photographer. The photos also remind me of Saul Leiter who I looked at for my summer project and also in videos of Todd Haynes talking about how they used his work as inspiration for the movie Carol, so I think it is extremely likely that he was in the back of my mind throughout. Also, it would be interesting to have filmed some stuff, but it likely would be very shakey.
Taking these photos was very cathartic as I had time to move around, stand on the window sill and think about my photos.
First photo I took was of leaves. I think the texture of the leaves looks cool especially with the yellow city light peaking through in contrast with the dark blue hue of the sky.
In this one I like the composition, with the corner of the building room cutting into the photo, the trees and street light to the right, and then the city in the top left corner. At this point I was just photographing things I could see.
A cluster of leaves.
A photo of the road/motorway. I really liked the mph sign and later on I tried to tamper with my shutter speed to make the cars giving way a solid look in contrast with a car zooming past in a blur. Again, I think these have a nice tone to them and the neon lights complement this.
corner of a road below that curves round the frame. This photo is very basic but I do like the faded yellow lines.
A crane cutting into frame with a light up billboard. I am really happy with the composition of this; the arm stretches into the photo and the billboard is in the centre.
I thought this was interesting as the streetlight controls what the viewer can see. There are leaves all around, but you can only see a cluster, highlighted with a sharp white light. Quite chiaroscuro.
A more obvious use of reflection to almost transfer the light into the sky.
The line created by the window reflection gives it a nice effect, especially as it runs down the side of the cranes which are topped with lights like a urban christmas tree haha.
Again, another interesting photo with strips down the side altering the frame in a natural way.
I attempted to photograph the road again, however tried to include the reflections from the things on the window sill. I tried to make things line up, however I still think it can be pretty interesting.
closer up of the building roof
trying to use the reflection of the window sill more.
Interesting photo of street lamp shining onto the leaves.
Trying different shutter Speeds:
I love these ones. the shutter speed makes it look dreamy and I love the 2nd one!!!! it reminds me of a shot of a film I was watching called '20th century women' which I took photos of while it was on TV and the shot is the last photo i took at the bottom of the page.
idk what this is hahah
some photos of the TV in the room. Ive always liked photos/drawings with TVs in them. I remember in 2016 when I was doing a photo a day and some of my favourite ones were where they had a TV in them and I also did a small painting that had a TV in it of my room.

This is an example of me photographing things I could see. I was still thinking about my photos, however later on, you can see how I try experiment more with what I have. This lowkey reminds me of the idea of the more 'takes'/'times' you do something the 30th/50th will be the best as it will bring out new things. Greta Gerwig talks about it in this video from 4:47
I think I like this photo as it the windows fill pretty much the whole frame. In addition to this, the colour contrast reminds me of Effets de soir, with the rich evening blue cold lighting and the yellow artificial human made lighting. Another thing I have noticed is that the photos have a nice sort of grainy/hesitating/slightly moving aspect from the lens as I was taking them hand held and also had to use a high ISO to make up for the high mm lens.
These are interesting, they remind me of some old horror movie. The first one in particular looks quite dampened in the top left corner, they both look dull and grainy and dark.A cluster of leaves.

This is basic, however I like the layers that the light adds. looks quite set/stage like
This is the first photo where you can clearly see me beginning to experiment with the window infront of me and the reflection from inside and out. This is one of my favourite photos as I really like the colour contrast and the outline, of what I think is me, down from top to bottom. The contrast of the buildings that run down the left hand side and the leaves that run down the right is interesting as they bracket the centre of the photography. The horizon is jagged with buildings and the sky looks textured/folded. The orange light burns in the bottom left and then is toned down as it hits the blueness of the sky.A more obvious use of reflection to almost transfer the light into the sky.

This i think is the reflection of the fridge in the room.
I tried to include the puddles on the rooftop and see what they would look like with reflections of the scene.
Out of focus lights/scenecloser up of the building roof

More Leaves
I realllyyy like these ones as they remind me of High Rise the book/movie. I tried different focuses and i think my favourite is the 2nd one.
Twin Cranes.

Pathway merged with reflections from the window
Self portraits in the window with different Focuses.idk what this is hahah
I really like these photos and I think you can see the Renaissance inspiration I had in mind as I had been looking at a few Renaissance pieces over the summer.
A central outline
interpreting the city/view into the photo more.

The mirror in the room to try and get the outside in the mirror.
