Self Portraits Test/Play Around | 21.09.17
I took these self portraits spontaneously on the 21st of September. Around this time I had been thinking about and trying different framing on my photos like on my summer project where i used a 1x1 frame. The photographs were, at first, purely experimental as I just wanted to see if it would look how I had imagined with the square framing and flash. I think this is also inspired by Andy Warhol's portraits as I have always liked the look of them aesthetically.
I decided to use the glasses as they add an element of absurdity and in addition to this, I was not too used to taking self portraits, so I think this was a way of it being not as intense and up front - something to hide behind. I read in an Andy Warhol: Self Portraits book that I read from my Sixth Form's library how self portraits tell you something about the artist, which I had never really thought about before, and I think this has stuck in my mind and I applied it to this in a way of what I want people to read from this.
Another concept that I really like is the idea that glasses are something that allow you to see into 'another world'. I have no idea why I thought of it, however I think it is something I want to develop more in the future.
The last three photos of the six below are kind of different and they're more experimenting as ideas developed after the first ones, for example they are shot at more obscure angles, with the face cut from from or canted slightly.
